Most of us have living rooms that are pieced together from whatever articles of furniture we could afford at the time. This can make for a living room that you don’t like. With just a little bit of work, you can transform your living room into a place you’ll love.
The first thing you need to do is decide the primary reason for your living room. This will help you make sure the living room is functional. Do you use the living room for family nights? Do you invite people over to your living room often? Do you just use the living room as a place to unwind?
1. Choosing the type of furniture
When you figured out how you’re going to use the living room, you can start making it look good. If your living room is used mostly for family nights, go with a large sectional group. That way, everybody can sit together. If you have small children, consider getting them bean bag chairs so they can sit in comfort. If you have frequent visitors, you should use smaller pieces of furniture. That way, you can move things around depending on who’s coming to visit.
2. Choosing the colors
When you are looking at wall colors, make sure you select something that goes well with the furniture. To make your living room appear bigger, make use of dark colors. The main thing is you want to make sure your colors go well with each other. Don’t choose colors which will clash.
3. Choosing the accessories
Don’t base what you buy on what is currently popular or in style. You don’t want to buy something only to find out just a few months later that what you’ve bought is no longer in good taste. Don’t be afraid to add some of your own personality to your living room. Include a few conversation pieces such as family heirlooms.
4. Choosing the lighting
Your living room will look bigger if you have tables and fixtures that reflect light. If you have cabinets in your living room, they should have glass doors to add to their appeal. Be sure to make wise use of lamps. If you choose a lamp with a glossy shade, it can make your living room look larger.
5. Choosing rugs
You can use area rugs to break your living room into smaller areas. An area rug can be used no matter what type of flooring you have. Make sure your furniture either rest on the rug or touch the edges.
6. Put the biggest furniture in the room first
The first thing you want to do is decide where to put your sofas, entertainment center, and other large entertainment center. Save yourself from time by drawing where you want your furniture using a piece of paper. If you use graph paper, you can create a scale. Use a pencil to draw where you will place your furniture. If you find you put something where it won’t fit, you can always erase and rearrange.
7. Add in the other furniture
After you have the biggest items in the living room, add in the next largest such as coffee tables. Then, add in lamps, plants, and any other decorative items. Hang up any artwork that you want to display. If something looks out of place in your living room, check to see if there’s another room it could go in.

My husband and I have recently bought a new house. Although we have started buying things for the room, we had no idea exactly how to make it look good. With the tips you have provided I guess we’ll now be able to plan our living room better. Thanks.
Loved this post. We just bought a new house and are having a tough time figuring out what to do with it. I’ll have to make sure my wife reads this for sure!
nice post, thank you for sharing this tips, now im planning to have a makeover with our house LOL
As a Realtor, I see that many people refer to a living room as a wasted space/room. If a house has a family room, people don’t know what to do with a living room. Perhaps I can share your article with them for some ideas.
Great post!
We just got through painting a house almost the exact same color as that one in the picture. I had to do a double take because the porch looked very similar. Great post by the way. Hope to add some good comments from time to time.
When I decorated my living room I painted the walls white and then chose contrasting colours of furniture. Some nice light wooden cabinets and a glass table really finished it off. My neighbours trees outside were also blocking a lot of the light so I asked him to trim them.
With the white walls and extra light it’s really a pleasure to sit and read in my living room!
My wife and I removed what I call “knick-knacks” from the living/family room replacing them with a few well placed greeneries and it’s made the space a lot more fresh and relaxing. Less is better.
